Motorhoming with your dog

Motorhoming with your dog

Is there a better road trip companion then your four legged best friend? We think not! Long walks in the Cumbrian Hills, late night fetch on the beach or simply snuggling up together in the motorhome after a day of adventures, you can't beat it.

So, we've compiled a few tips to keep you and your furry friend happy (and safe) when you're hitting the road in your motorhome.

Keeping your dog safe when driving is essential

Leaving your dog to run the motorhome while you're driving can be dangerous for both you and your dog, just like us dogs have to be properly secured when you're hitting the road. As mentioned in the Highway Code ''driving with an unrestrained dog can lead to fines or even being charged with careless driving'' so it's important to always use a seat belt harness or a dog cage (if your dog is crate trained) when you're dog is joining your adventures.

As well as keeping your dog safe, it's also important to keep them comfortable. Creating a safe space just for them ensures they feel nice and relaxed while travelling. Using familiar blankets and toys can help them feel at home and also not keeping them to far away, as dogs tend to feel much calmer when they can see or smell their humans! Make sure they have access to water at all times and if your pup tends to get travel sickness, try restricting their meals a few hours before travel (or give them a couple ginger biscuits before setting off!)

Dog friendly stops

On long journeys it's important to make regular stops for both you and your four legged friend! A bit of fresh air and a leg stretch is essential, plus you can't forget about the road trip snacks. But not all stops cater or even allow dogs on site, so we've compiled a couple dog-friendly service stations.

-The Hog & Hedge

If you're heading down to Devon or Cornwall The Hog & Hedge make sure that your furry friend feels as welcome as you do! With water bowls and pet treats located throughout, it's dog friendly inside and even provides large exercise areas so your dog can let of some steam before hitting the road again! They have locations in Okehampton, Devon and Newbury, Berkshire.

-Tebay Services

One of our personal favorites is Tebay Services in Cumbria. If you're traveling to Keswick, Penrith, or Carlisle it's well worth a stop, even just to look around the Farm Shop. Tebay is dog-friendly and if you and your pup need a leg stretch, the surrounding area offers beautiful walks with some stunning views over Howgill Fells. Even if you're not going directly past, this service station is worth the detour! (It also has overnight parking for motorhomes and campers)

Also, when booking campsites make sure to check out The Caravan & Motorhome Club for their dog-friendly spots, look out for the 'Paws of Approval'.

Essentials for travelling with your dog

When you're getting packed up for your adventures, it's important to not only think about what you will need but what your dog will too!

Don't forget:

  • An extra long lead (give your dog a bit of freedom when parked up)
  • Dog food and lots of treats
  • A familiar blanket/dog bed
  • An up to date collar tag
  • Toys and chews
  • Foldable water bowls (for long walks)
  • Tick hook
  • Vet and insurance details (just in case!)
  • Pet passport (if you're going overseas)

Another good thing to think about is preperation before you set off. Make sure your dog has a nice long walk, with many opportunities to empty their bladder! Plus tiring them out before a long journey means they'll get lots of sleep on the way there.

Motorhoming with your dog is great and is a major reason why people opt for motorhomes and campervans, so your furry friend is never left behind.

However, if you're dog finds travelling uncomfortable we might have the solution. VB systems make your journeys smoother and safer, which in return could lead to a more relaxed furry friend.
